Amoeba Music: Review and Interview with Nick Reinhart and free Tera Melos instore on April 14th in San Francisco
Sacramento avant-rockers Tera Melos will play Amoeba San Francisco April 14 at 2 p.m. Their latest record, X’ed Out (due April 16 on Sargent House), is a blast of tightly coiled riffs unraveling in all directions while sweet melodies keep the whole thing grounded in the eye of the storm. “Weird Circles” chugs along on math-rock riffery, while “New Chlorine” starts like some demonic cover of “Chopsticks” before unveiling a big, acidic rocker. “Bite” balances nasty, nauseous riffs with big, dreamy choruses, while “Sunburn” is the band’s clearest entry point, with non-stop riffs tapping underneath the band’s bright melodies. They chill out for ballads like “Snake Lake” and “No Phase,” as concerned with heavenly harmony as the guitar trickery beneath the surface, and they ease the tension with the sunshine pop of “Tropic Lame.” It’s been a while since we’ve heard a band as unabashedly guitar-centric as Tera Melos that can also write a decent pop song, recalling their Northern California brethren like Deerhoof and Hella, and while X’ed Out has its share of heady noodling, Tera Melos never sound self-indulgent. It’s a feast for guitar geeks and a reminder that indie rock need not be a laid-back, tepid affair. They make indie-prog that’s as fun to listen to as it is impressive, and that’s no easy feat.
I caught up with the band’s Nick Reinhart as Tera Melos prepared for a tour that begins with their Amoeba performance. They’ll be back in California in May, hitting L.A.’s The Echo May 23 and on May 25th in San Francisco at Bottom of the Hill.
SPIN: Tera Melos’ X’ed Out Full Album Stream a week early
Over three albums and a couple lineup changes, Tera Melos, the Sacramento trio fronted by guitarist/vocalist Nick Reinhert, has made a full shift from the unconventional song structures of ambient-indebted post rock to hyper-technical guitar pop. And while ambling 28-minute songs may be a thing of the past, his band’s new effort shows that they aren’t keen to let up on the chaos. X’ed Out picks up largely where the band’s 2010 LP Patagonian Rats left off, drenching Reinhert’s demure vocals in labyrinthine guitar work. But X’d Out goes even further than its predecessor, keeping the rapid-fire instrumentation but peeling back some of the instrumental layers to put the focus more firmly on the vocals. The buoyant riffing of tracks like “Sunburn” and “Surf Nazis” moves the band into the territory of fellow experimentalists-gone-pop-maximalists Marnie Stern and Maps & Atlases. That’s some good company to keep.

Circuit Sweet Exclusive: Tera Melos Live Interview & Feature
The enigmatic Sacramento based 3 piece Tera Melos are no strangers to Circuit Sweet.
As previously stated Tera Melos have built up more than a reputation for themselves in the 8 attentive years their name has been known. Nick Reinhart and Nathan Latona found themselves in a tough position following the disbandment of their former outfit- no regard. Needing to continue their music; Tera Melos was formed in 2004 and has since released 1 split, 5 EP’s and 3 albums. Lost an original member, gained a new talent in drummer John Clardy, played copious amounts of live shows and signed to Sargent House. The three aside from touring are currently writing material for their latest album release.
After finally getting the chance to see the legendary band last year during their long overdue UK tour, we then had the pleasure in speaking with guitarist Nick on behalf of the band. This interview proved such a popular feature the amount of views it received crashed the site!- Still one of the most loves article on our site which you can re-visit here.
Since last year’s interview we have kept close with the band and all the Tera Melos updates. We’ve even had Nick join us for our end of year special feature Rad Releases. In February of this year we published the announcement that Tera Melos were returning to the UK. It was announced Tera Melos would be heading overseas in May to headline a massive UK/EU tour after playing some of the April re-union shows with legendary fIREHOSE in the states. Their tour took them to the UK, Ireland, France, Sweden, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Russia, Ukraine and many more places.
Tera Melos Debut New Song in Live Session Video
Tera Melos took a second off during their 59 Shows in 60 Days European tour to stop in and play a brand new song for Cock And Bull TV in Ireland. The song is so new it’s not even named yet. New album coming in 2013 on Sargent House.

Terroreyes TV : Interview with Nick Reinhart

Tera Melos are an experimental rock band from Sacramento, CA. We sat down for a quick chat with Nick Reinhart to talk about their upcoming record, past and future collaborations and prank phone calls.
Sean: You guys are working on a new record right now? How’s that going?
Nick: Good. We’ve done most of all the basic tracking- guitar, drums and bass. Started vocals before fIREHOSE tour. It is looking like we’ll finish everything up after Europe.
S: Are you guys taking any different approaches with this record? Anything different that you are excited about?
N: Well we initially set out to make a more back to basics, mellow, minimal record. At least that was my idea around this time last year. But that totally did not happen. Haha. The vibe of the record is a little more straightened out than before. Although our idea of straightened out is probably still pretty out there for all intents and purposes. All the new stuff is very exciting, mostly just because it exists in territories that we haven’t really explored.
S: In what way? What sort of territories?
N: I guess I wouldn’t know how to describe it other than knowing that it’s something that we haven’t done musically. It could probably be quantified by the average, casual listener as sounding “less fucked up.”
S: “Patagonian Rats” Your last record, I would say was fairly accessible for the average music listener, would you say this record is going to be more poppy?
N: There are a few choruses that will get stuck in your head, so I guess that makes it more poppy. People that liked our last record will definitely like this one.

Track By Track with Tera Melos “Patagonian Rats”
“Behind Patagonian Rats” Interview by Bobby Markos (of Native)
When an album is released, it is picked and prodded at by critics and fans alike. The songs are played over and over and read at their face value. But often times, we as listeners forget that there is another dimension to an album: the mind and timeline that went into creating it.
Tera Melos’ masterpiece “Patagonian Rats,” with its vast array of swooping content, acid-tripped melodies and unforgettable hooks was released to the public in September of 2010. With it being the band’s first or second full length (it is a long story), it was put under the critic’s microscope. Sure we all know it is technical, sure we all know it is a poppy rendition of a traditional “Melos-piece”, but do we know the emotional and exhausting story that ended up being just under 50 minutes long? Such a story needs to be told, and thus unfolds here today.
Going into the writing process, did you have any ideas for what you wanted “Patagonian Rats” to be?
Nathan Latona: We had started writing one or two songs with our old drummer. When Vince quit, it was like let’s see what happens next. We realized we could write new material that would lend to a different type of drummer. We knew the drummer was going to help carve out the direction that our band was going to go in, we were going into the unknown.
John Clardy: I think there was definitely an idea going into it, if nothing else that it would be another step in the path the band has been on with its releases. When I first joined Tera Melos they mentioned that the new songs were “headed in a less freaked out direction” which made sense looking at the lineage from the first album to “Drugs to Complex.” I was on board with that immediately because I thought each of those releases improved upon the last one. I could see the melding of the gnarly out there stuff and vocals with a strong emphasis on melody coming along and felt good about it.
Nick Reinhart: I don’t think I could articulate the idea we had for it. It was just something we had wanted to do for a long time. A few people have asked about the theme of the record: my answer is “Patagonian Rats” is Patagonian Rats. It wasn’t until after we finished recording it that we realized it had its own life and became its own thing. I think it is a really cohesive record that’s incredibly fucked up and non-cohesive at the same time. To me, this is something I’ve always wanted to do with the band. When our old drummer quit, we wanted to further explore song structure coupled with some newer ideas/concepts and write a record that we’d always wanted to write, so we found a drummer that could do just that. Our band has always sounded the way we wanted it to sound based on what we were capable of. We were not good enough 5 years ago to write Patagonian Rats.
How did the writing process begin?
